VDXipedia

VDXipedia is designed to:

  • help System Admin implement new functionality and/or new-found functionality within VDX
  • allow VDX and ZPORTAL users to share their experiences

Checkout what is new in VDX 3.1 by clicking on the Release News link on the navigation bar.

This is a work in progress if you have any Suggestions please enter them on this page.

Every effort has been made to ensure that the information herein is
correct, but things change and so will the pages as time goes on.

Vendor Interops Status

OCLC PICA prides itself on being available to do interops testing with other vendors. The Vendor Interops Status page is updated regularly with the current testing status.

ISO ILL Interop Information

VDX conforms to the ILL Protocol Implementors Group's Profile of the ISO ILL Standard (ISO 10160:1997 and ISO 10161-1:1997).

Our Profile Implementation Conformance Statement is available here.

This Word file contains a list of scenarios used when performing interop tests.

Vendors who wish to conduct ISO ILL interop testing please contact Cathy Carter: c.carter@oclcpica.org.

NCIP Interop Information

VDX and ZPortal support for NCIP

VDX and ZPortal conform to the Circ/ILL NCIP Application Profile (available in two parts: borrowing and lending).

VDX also conforms to the DCB-3 NCIP Application Profile (available at the NISO web site as a PDF.)

Circ/ILL and DCB-3 are essentially identical Application Profiles of the NISO Circulation Interchange Protocol, or NCIP (available as Z39.83 part 1 & 2 at the NISO web site).

What NCIP and SIP automate in VDX
  • When receiving an item at the borrowing library:
    • Creates temporary bibliographic & item records.
      • This is done via NCIP's 'Accept Item' service or an extended SIP service named 'Create New'.
    • Puts the item on hold for the patron so that the circulation system notifies the patron that it’s available.
      • This is done via the same NCIP 'Accept Item' service invocation, or the same SIP 'Create New' service.
  • When a patron checks their requests:
    • Checks local circ status to distinguish items on the hold shelf from items they’ve checked out.
      • This is done via NCIP's 'Lookup Item' service. It is not available via SIP.
  • When the borrowing library returns an item:
    • Ensures the item is discharged from the patron’s record.
      • This is done via NCIP's 'Check In Item' service, or an extended SIP service named 'Delete Item'.
  • When requests arrive at the lender:
    • Locates available copies and places a hold on one.
      • Locating available copies is done via Z39.50.
      • Placing the hold is done via NCIP's 'Request Item' service. It is not available via SIP.
  • When the lender ships items:
    • Checks items out, allowing the due date to be assigned by circ system.
      • This is done via NCIP's 'Check Out Item' service or SIP's 'Check-out' service.
  • When requests (that have not yet been shipped by the lender) are cancelled:
    • Cancels the hold in the lender’s circ system.
      • This is done via NCIP's 'Cancel Request Item' service. It is not available in SIP.
  • When the patron requests a renewal of an item:
    • Requests permission to renew from the lending library’s circulation system.
      • This is done via NCIP's 'Renew Item' service. It is not available in SIP.
    • If that permission is granted it will renew the item that is checked out to the patron.
      • This is done via NCIP's 'Renew Item' service. It is not available in SIP.

Please note:

  • The phrase 'not available in SIP' means it has not yet been implemented in VDX for the SIP protocol; an appropriate service may well exist in SIP.
  • The phrase 'an extended SIP service' identifies services that OCLC PICA has designed as extensions to the SIP protocol for services that do not exist in the version published by 3M (known as Version 2).
Talking to your circulation system vendor

If the vendor of your circulation system is listed as having completed NCIP interops testing with us then you should contact OCLC PICA support to enable that feature. If your vendor is not listed you should ask them if they have implemented the role of the circulation system in the Circ/ILL Application Profile of NCIP, or the roles of the Item and User Agencies in the DCB-3 Application Profile of NCIP. If they say they have or they will consider doing so, please give them the URL of this page so they can review this information and contact us.

This Word file contains a list of scenarios we use when performing interop tests.

This Word file contains a set of sample messages (initiation messages that VDX or ZPortal send, with matching responses that your circulation system should return).

This PDF slideshow illustrates how NCIP services are used to integrate operations between an ILL or resource sharing system and a circulation automation system.

Vendors who wish to conduct NCIP interop testing please contact John Bodfish: j.bodfish@oclcpica.org.
